Must’ve been listening to cassettes in my dads car. He used to drive a lot and I remember the shadows cassette he would play to put me to sleep on long journeys. Not because it was boring or anything, but slow melodic stuff to sooth you off to laa laa land.
1ST RECORD BOUGHT?
Definitely Maybe – Oasis must have been 1994.
1st GIG?
Reading Festival. Was the first thing I could get to then, snuck off for the whole weekend with some friends, got into loads of trouble, saw a load of bands I’d never heard of, then went home to face another kind of music. The Reverend Horton Heat played Saturday, the verve Friday , Manic Street Preachers on Saturday too. Was a great weekend.
1ST STYLE OF MUSIC YOU REALLY GOT INTO AND WHY?
Got into the Brit-pop wave of the 90’s. It seemed to be reflecting the mood of the country and I was enjoying bands like supergrass, oasis and manic street preachers. I don’t know why I got into it. Just seemed to be the right thing to do at the time…
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU 1ST COME ACROSS THE MUSIC THAT YOU’RE INTO NOW?
Through a good friend. Was always listening to scene music, and would occaisionally comment on a track that I liked. He eventually gave me a few cd’s with different genres on them. That was it!
Cock Sparrer, Argy Bargy, Frantic Flintstones, Long Tall Texans, Nashville Pussy, Evil Conduct, The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners, Dropkick Murphys, Kings of Nuthin, Pipes and Pints, (insert massive continuous list here)
NEWER BANDS?
The Pressure Tones, Henry and the Bleeders, Cowboy and the Corpse
ALBUMS?
Don’t have an all time favourite. I’ve been running around the “scene” for about 3 years, and it’s not long enough for me to make those kinds of decisions. Still discovering new things, so my tastes are changing accordingly (or not if the new thing is rubbish).
VENUES?
Wild @ Heart in Berlin, Kreuzberg. Great place, always good concerts in there, tiki bar next door with English brekkies and pg tips! Many a morning or night spent in there.
No. Berlin usually pulls bands into it like a venus fly trap. But I will travel for bands who are not coming around here.
IS THERE ONE BAND THAT YOU WOULD OR HAVE GONE ANYWHERE TO SEE?
Nope.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR EVENT THAT YOU WONT MISS, NO MATTER WHO’S ON THE LINE-UP?
The Brandenburg Rockabilly Meeting. The music there is not always my cup of tea, (and the place is packed full of weird german teddyboys) but other people I do know there are really great people so I go to spend the weekend enjoying myself and occaisionally listening to a band that I like (like this year The Go Getters)
ARE GIGS ANY DIFFERENT NOW TO BACK WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? Don’t know. I always went to weekenders when I was younger, because it was easier for me to save for them as a kid, and that hasn’t changed for me (the people at them are different though). I would say that it has relaxed a lot though. Used to all stick to your own group of people and not mix too much, but now it’s almost a family-friendly atmosphere I find. People chatting to one another, strangers exchanging views and opinions etc. A positive development.
FAVOURITE GIG? Has to be my first psychobilly concert. Long Tall Texans and Demented are GO. What a night! Got silly drunk, wrecked like a steam train got covered in bruises and scared my girflfriend half to death the next morning with all my bruises and my “Hollywood niveau” black eye!
ANY OTHER MEMORABLE GIGS TO DESCRIBE?
First Meteors gig. Met the legend himself. Thought he’d be taller. Haha Psychomania Rumble this year. Three days of pure madness. Check out my review on wreckingpit.com to see what I mean.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE/DISLIKE MOST ABOUT GIGS?
Like the locations, the people, cheap drinks, good laughs and interesting bands. Dislike the clique-ness, the idiots and the people who stand around the pit, just to push you without getting in themselves.
Welcomed? Hard to say. I wasn’t rejected. It’s the wrong kind of question I think. Because if you’re that socially conscious of your position in the “scene” your probably someone I wouldn’t talk to anyway. I’ve always listened to what I want and dressed & acted how I want. I don’t care what other people think about me.
Information is plentiful, gigs are on the increase. It’s becoming a problem now choosing what concert/weekender to go to. But I would say there is no lack of info on things to do and places to go.
Do I see myself sticking with it? Yes. I have finally found something I can identify with, and the music is just brilliant.
I don’t’ think any scene can survive without newcomers. Tolerance of more new bands maybe? Or more encouragement of potential talent, some constructive criticism maybe.
Like an English teeneager in the 90’s. Jeans, fred perry/ben sherman shirt. Smart trainers or shoes. Hair : no particular hairstyle. Short back and sides like me old man I suppose. No quiff though.
AND NOW?
Jeans, t-shirt (plain, fred perry, Lonsdale, band shirt, festival shirt), boots or trainers. Hair: Shaved, cause I’m going bald, at 27!
DO YOU DRESS LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME OR JUST TO GO OUT?
All the time. Put on better or worse looking jeans and t-shirt for out/work. Wear a suit on occasion. (Like births/deaths/court appearances)
HOW MUCH TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY DO YOU SPEND TO LOOK LIKE THAT?
Not a lot.
TATTOOS/PIERCINGS?
Yeah I got two tattoos. One on my chest, one on my right shoulder down to the elbow. My chest is an old school pair of swallows (good/evil) carrying a banner with the words “citius altius fortius”. And the shoulder piece is a medieval armor piece. I consider my tattoos a part of me, and not my image.
I plan to get more, just don’t know when/where/what. I get them when the idea and area present themselves. DO want to get sleeved though.
DO YOU THINK OTHERS HAVE TO LOOK THE PART TO BE WELCOMED INTO THE SCENE?
Look how you want. Just be prepared to get funny looks from people who think it’s important. Ok, on that note, pink shellsuits look gay anyway, so if you turn up to a gig in one of those, it’s your own fault!
IS YOUR IMAGE IMPORTANT TO YOU?
I’m not bothered what people think of me. Those who know me and/or are friends of mine (and I can count them on 2 hands) know me to be a stand up straight laced guy. Those who judge by face value, or don’t see beneath the “loud bouncing Englishman” just aren’t worth the effort.
IS A BAND’S IMAGE IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Yes. It shows seriousness of intent. If they turn up in their pyjamas, it better be because it’s 10 in the morning, or because that’s their uniforms.
WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE IMAGE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX IN YOUR SCENE?
That someone set up a production line turning out models with jet black hair, styled with that fringe at the front, cherry red lips, a polkadot blouse, pencil skirt stockings and high heels. Obviously accessories and details vary, but that’s the theme.
Like? Wild individual styles, attitude, full lips, nice hips and firm… you know.
HAS YOUR IMAGE EVER CAUSED AN UNWELCOME REACTION FROM OTHERS?
Yep, I’m a big lad, with a shaved head, in Germany. Has engendered the occasional discussion with people over my political and personal situation. Some of them were longer than others, but I am quite persuasive at getting my point across.
DOES YOUR SENSE OF STYLE EXTEND TO YOUR HOME? No. I don’t believe in that. Touches here and there, but nothing so ‘in your face’.
FRIENDSHIPS/REALATIONSHIPS « Reply #7 on Jul 17, 2009, 5:28pm »
WOULD YOU ONLY DATE PEOPLE WHO SHARE THE SAME MUSICAL TASTES?
No. I would just need them to accept the music I listen to. They don’t have to listen to the same kind of music, although that’s a bonus of course.
ARE YOU ATTRACTED TO PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE SCENE?
No. Normal girls are to stupid. Goths and emos are weird, and anything else just isn’t cricket! It has to someone from inside the scene. From one end to the other
IF YOU HAVE DATED/MARRIED THOSE FROM OUTSIDE, HAS IT CAUSED PROBLEMS WITHIN THE RELATIONSHIP OR EVEN CAUSED A SPLIT?
Yep, one of my ex’s saw me after my first concert and that was the beginning pf the end of us as a couple. Funny though.
CAN YOU ONLY RELATE TO PEOPLE WHO SHARE THE SAME TASTES?
I know people who have tastes in all kinds of music. Friendship bases itself on common ground, music is just the easiest.
DO YOU FEEL AN OUTSIDER AROUND “NORMAL” PEOPLE, SUCH AS WORK COLLEAGUES?
No.
IS THERE A VIBRANT SCENE IN YOUR AREA?
Berlin. A massive, vibrant, pulsing monster of a scene! Love it here…
ARE SOME/MOST OF YOUR FRIENDSHIPS MAINTAINED ONLINE?
Some of them are. My friends from England are of course only available to me over the web.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF FORUMS/MYSPACE, ETC?
Useful things. But things all the same. We have phones/cars to talk/visit our friends instead of chatting to them ceaselessly online.
DID YOUR LOVE OF A PARTICULAR STYLE OF MUSIC INSPIRE YOUR WHEELS OR VISA VERSA?
Nope. Just a cult car.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET INTO YOUR WHEELS SCENE?
Started playing around with cars at about 13. Got a modern apprenticeship and became a car mechanic.
WHAT HAVE YOU OWNED IN THE PAST?
Fors escort xr3i, ford mondeo, MK II golf, Mercedes A-Class, BMW 318ti (e36 compact)
WHAT SORT OF MONEY DO YOU SPEND ON THIS PASSION?
I try to balance it out. I intend to keep this car as original as possible, so maintenance is a must. However that means washing, polishing and regular check-ups are a MUST, not a must…
DO YOU PREFER THE WHEELS SCENE NOW OR IN THE PAST?
Don’t really do the car scene thing. But the community I visit is a great bunch, so I’d say now. In the past when I did my boy racer thing it was always about the image, then power and style. Now it’s about restoration, preservation and driving passion. Good change.
IS THE MUSIC OR THE RIDE MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Equal parts. Can’t enjoy driving to the max without the right music.
Travelled on the train to a concert in Osnabruck, spent all me money on booze and fags, had to jump the train back, got a broken finger from dancing and still could not figure out how to work the toilet on the train. Ended up using a beer bottle I think.
Had to explain my black eye to my boss from my first concert. He just shook his head and sent me back into the workshop…
SUM UP THE SCENE NOW:
Growing, changing, exciting. I hope the future holds and long and prosperous life for the scene, the music and the people. I think it will go on for a long time, just not sure if it’ll be long enough
DO YOU CONSIDER DRUGS/DRINK TO BE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR SCENE?
No. If that’s your thing, then go for it. Not essential, or compulsory. I like drinking at a gig, but I like staying sober and driving too.
IS THERE A SONG THAT SUMS IT ALL UP?
We Know How to Live – Cock Sparrer, We Are Rockers – Godless Wicked Creeps
